Southern Thanalan is a zone located in Thanalan.

The Sagolii Desert and the Grand Wake can be found to the south and east, respectively, of this area, which is the southernmost part of Thanalan. As the Amalj'aa see these burned plains as sacred land and have often used force to seize the territories in the name of their deity, Ifrit, the region has a problematic reputation.

Geography[ | ]

Broken Water[ | ]

Early inhabitants were ecstatic when they first discovered a supply of water in this dry area. They named the location Broken Water to warn people who would come after, as they were much less happy to hear that it was dirty and unfit for drinking.

  • Little Ala Mhigo: Refugees from Ala Mhigo struggling to fit in with Ul'dahn culture finally made their way to southern Thanalan after being rejected by the Twelveswood elementals. This area now functions as a post to watch the activities of the Amalj'aa because the locals grant the Immortal Flames permission to maintain a presence in exchange for supplies.
  • The Sepulchre: The Corpse Brigade, once a proud division of the Ala Mhigan army, has its lair in the Sepulchre. Because they backed the despotic rule of their previous ruler, members of this division are banned from refugee camps. As a result, the Brigade has been reduced to a group of small-time criminals.
  • The Sunken Temple of Qarn: The majority of ancient Belahdian civilisation experts assert that this winding maze of intricate chambers served as a place of devotion for the sun goddess Azeyma. However, recent excavations have revealed ancient chambers buried beneath the new containing artifacts from the Sixth Astral Era, raising the possibility that the temple was created by a different civilization.
  • Ring of Ash: The Brotherhood of Ash, a group of Amalj'aa warriors who find no virtue in mindless submission to the primordial lfrit, is based here. The Flamefangs are their mortal adversaries, thus they are honing their skills to beat them.

Zanr'ak[ | ]

In practice, if not in name, Zanr'ak—which in the Amalj'aa language means "land of indomitability"—is the major realm of the beast tribe. Since Ifrit first appeared to the beastmen in ancient times, the term is believed to have held special importance.

  • Circle of the Tempered: People have settled here have had their souls purified by lfrit's fires, transforming them into the tempered thralls of the primal. Mamanzo the Charred, a thaumaturge whose head bears a severe price, may likewise be finding safety here.
  • Zanr'ak Encampment: What the main camp, Zahar'ak, cannot hold is held here. According to reports, the beastmen manning this forward base come from smaller tribes.
  • Zanr'ak Altar: The Amaij'aa have never been known to engage in combat without first making a journey to this gory altar of sacrifice, which is used to predict the fate of upcoming wars.

Zahar'ak[ | ]

The Amalj'aa host's largest bastion, Zahar'ak, which roughly translates to "land of perseverance," is located in their home territory of Paglth'an. The beast tribe is determined to expel everyone they perceive as invaders from the scorched plains of Thanalan because they believe it to be holy territory sanctified by the purifying flames of their primordial god, Ifrit.

The Red Labyrinth[ | ]

As its name suggests, this area is an intricate network of naturally eroded corridors that wind across a crimson sandstone valley. There are many unsubstantiated rumors about travelers getting lost for days in this tiny defile.

  • Nald's Reflection: Worshiping the Trader Nald, overseer of riches and trade on the material plane, is thought to bring about immeasurable wealth during one's lifetime. In the past, both princes and commoners alike made pilgrimages to this secluded place of prayer in hope of wealth. Until Milvaneth Sacrarium inaugurated a brand-new (toll-based) temple inside Ul'dah, that is.
  • The Minotaur Malm: According to local lore, a minotaur once ambushed and pursued a young goatherd who was carrying his pack to water at Forgotten Springs through these tunnels. Although the creature hasn't been seen again, the tales are enough to scare off the majority of travelers who might consider passing through this trading hub used by the Seventy-Seven Caravans.

Sagoliii Desert[ | ]

Ul'dah uses this desert only to expel the worst of its offenders as it can be a harsh mistress for everything living. The young and unbloodied test themselves on the large worms that "swim" beneath its sun-baked sands, while the Amalj'aa, on the other hand, think it has been cleansed by holy flame.

  • Forgotten Springs: The U tribe of the Miqo'te live in this town and eat game from the Sagolii Desert as well as water from the oasis. It once served as a trading post for travelers heading to Cape Deadwind, Aldenard's southernmost point. But as the coastline region deteriorated as a result of ongoing pirate attacks, fewer and fewer people entered the Springs, and now Ul'dah has all but forgotten about it.
  • Byregot's Strike: The Sons of Saint Coinach claim that the Sagolii Desert was once a beautiful sea of lush plains capable of supporting vast civilisation, as shown by the recent discovery of Allagan ruins nearby. Since then, a giant drilling apparatus known as Byregot's Strike has been built on the location in an effort to shatter the rock beneath the dunes and uncover the mysteries beneath.[1]
